  • The Look: A perfectly circular 60-meter deep sinkhole with vines hanging from the rim to the water.

Introduction: The “Sacred Blue” Cenote

Cenote Ik Kil is often the first image people see when they search for “cenotes.” It is a stunning example of an open-air cenote (cylinder style) where the roof has completely collapsed, leaving a massive circular opening to the sky.

Located in the heart of the Yucatan, just a stone’s throw from the ancient Mayan city of Chichén Itzá, Ik Kil was considered sacred by the Maya, who used it for both water and religious ceremonies.

The Experience: Swimming with the Vines

Descending the carved stone staircase into the cenote is like entering another world. The water is a deep, cool blue, and the walls are draped in hundreds of tropical vines that reach down toward the water’s surface.

Jumping and Jumping Platforms

Unlike many cenotes that have natural rock jumps, Ik Kil features a series of built-in stone platforms at varying heights.

  • The Main Jump: Approx. 5 meters (15 feet). It is deep and safe, with lifeguards usually on duty.

Snorkeling and Visibility

While the water is clear, it is very deep (approx. 40-50 meters). You won’t see many rock formations at the bottom, but the view looking up through the vines while floating on your back is unbeatable.
